Opening of All Weather Astro Turf

Opening of All Weather Sports Facilities – 13th October 2009

England Football Star to open superb new Sports Facilities at Bucklers Mead Community School

England and Southampton Legend Matthew Le Tissier is to formally open the new All Weather  Sports Pitches at Bucklers Mead Community School. This is the first phase of superb new sports facilities which will, when all completed, represent over £1,000,000 worth of investment by the school for our students and for Yeovil. The All Weather Facilities have been developed in conjunction with the Football Foundation and is one of the largest investments in “grass roots” sport in the South West. The initial opening is of the all weather 3 generation flood lit astro turf football and hockey pitches. And between now and summer 2011 we plan to develop new high standard community changing facilities, a Community Sports Education Unit, fitness rooms and dance studios. Improve our cricket pitch, lay new drainage on our existing fields to allow for a range of mini pitches to be laid around the site, extend our 5-a-side pitches and build a dome roof and flood lit tennis courts.

Bucklers Mead is one of the most successful secondary schools in the region and refuses to become complacent as it strives to build on recent success. This summer the school achieved record GCSE results with 60% of students achieving 5 A*-C; this follows a focused Ofsted inspection into our PE department and looked at how we encourage students to be healthy. The Inspectors described our work as “Outstanding”. Our recent whole school Ofsted also stated that the school has “many Outstanding features”. The school is proud to be able to provide these superb facilities for our students and the wider community of Yeovil. As the following phases of the development get underway the school will truly become a centre of excellence which all may enjoy.

The Opening of the All Weather Sports Facilities by Matt Le Tissier will take place on Tuesday 13th October 2009 which is also Bucklers Meads Open Evening for Prospective Parents and Year 6 students with hundreds of visitors expected.

A Press Call will be held at 4:45pm following which Matt Le Tissier will declare the facility open at 6pm and then he will be holding coaching sessions and football demonstrations. For further information please contact the school on 01935 424454 and ask for either Mike Featherstone (Headteacher) or Andrew Thelwell (Assistant Headteacher – Press and Publicity).
